Relate to thy neighbouring neuron (human)

Humans are like neurons.

each, a bundle of tangled minute structures that mosaic a much larger entity.

“Humans are certainly significantly larger than neurons” you may say. But you only have to hop on an aeroplane and elevate deep into the eternal blue to realise that looking down, millions of human lives appear the size of mere ants, littering the muddy earth; requiring microscopic magnification to distinguish one from the next.

I guess my point is that as each neuron has a path; a function and direction; so does each human’s life. Frustration and envy at life or the path of another neuron is not only a form of ungratefulness for the magnitude of your capability, and your importance in the larger structure. It is also a distraction from your own magical path.

It is much wiser and more fruitful to try to relate to human life. As large as they maybe in number, the variety of obstacles that can face humans are never unique to one single life. That’s just not how it works. So through relating to others, we can only better ourselves, not only leading a much more fulfilled life but also bettering humanity in general.

Never say “I would never”.

I bet that at some point in your life, you have said “oh I hate it when people *INSERT ANNOYING HUMAN BEHAVIOUR HERE*, or “I would never… blah blah ..etc”. And then a few days down the line you find yourself engaging in that very behaviour that you condemned, and you sense this feeling of hypocrisy creeping in.

The scary and somewhat disturbing truth seems to be that circumstance or situation, and the mere presence of an authority figure (i.e a scientist, who you can blame for your disturbing acts) can make you commit the most monstrous atrocities , and looking back you’re left with a permanent chill of horror running through your spine at what you did…

Now ask yourself a question, if you ever asked anyone (who is mentally stable) whether they would unreasonably torture or electrocute to death an innocent human being, of course they would say no. And if the next question was “but if a man in a scientist’s coat asked you to, then would you?” Hopefully, the answer would still be “no”.

newsflash; without getting too deep into it, two experiments conducted in the 60’s-70’s by Milgram(1962) and Zimbardo(1971) showed that in fact, given the opportunity, (apparently sane) human beings are capable of all of the above (and god knows how much worse if given the chance).

Links to the two experiments mentioned above;

Now even though these studies were conducted a long time ago from now, I think one of the most important lessons we can take from them is that none of us are perfect. Inherently, a human’s behaviour is more complex than their own neural network! And so the next time you judge somebody else for anything, no matter how small, perhaps stop yourself on the basis that tomorrow you may be acting just like them; there’s no rule saying you won’t is there?

Happy thinking

Provoking “thought-ing”.

Hello dear reader,

I am quite literally conflicted as to whether I should go ahead and introduce myself again or just delve straight in with my official first post (even though this blog was conceived almost 2 entire months ago) (humorous);

Ok. let’s just pretend this blog is a neuron. one that is barely alive. it rarely gets excited by its neighbours; however, on some days, it remembers its existence, and fuelled by newfound creative juices from its own nucleus, it begins firing aimlessly.

I bring to you a thought provoking piece which I scribbled a couple of days ago into my notebook.

13th december 2017;

and I can’t help the feeling of fear and humility that overcame me,

fuelled by the realisation of how fragile human life truly is.

you see, being qualified as a Doctor doesn’t mean disease and illness won’t ever consume you;

being a Psychologist wont rid your risk of heartbreak and depression;

and being a Geographer won’t save you in the circumstance of a tsunami or any other natural disaster.

and most importantly, prolonging your youth and life; no matter what cosmetic potions and surgical procedures you turn to, wont ever scare away old age and death.

Human’s truly are the most intelligent specie on this earth; but intellect can’t save you from the fragility of your being and your promised death.
